The shade-tolerant lawn seed and fertiliser mix for new sowing and revitalisation
Sowing and fertilising in one pass. Westland Smart Seed is the ideal seed-fertiliser mixture for the new planting and revitalisation of resilient sports, play and ornamental lawns in shady locations and partial shade. The selection of particularly shade-tolerant, long-lasting lawn grass varieties in a unique protective cover, combined with the right amount of starter fertiliser, leads quickly and reliably to a dense lawn with lush greenery in a single pass.
Smart Seed is also ideal for closing gaps in the lawn and for denser green of thinned lawns (revitalisation) in the shade.

Application period
Sowing can take place throughout the season between April and October. The rainier weeks in spring between April and May or in early autumn from mid-September to mid-October are best suited. It should be noted that optimal germination is only possible from a permanent soil temperature above 10 °C. Extreme shade is generally unsuitable for lawns.
1. Preparation
New lawn planting, lawn repair: Loosen the soil thoroughly, free it from coarse stones, moss and weeds and use a rake to ensure that the surface is as finely crumbled as possible. In doing so, smooth out holes and other unevenness. In the event of drought, water the soil thoroughly the day before sowing. However, waterlogging should be avoided. If thinned lawns are to be provided with denser greenery, thorough soil cultivation is not necessary. It is sufficient to mow the lawn briefly and scarify it slightly.
2. Sowing
To ensure a good distribution of the seeds and fertiliser grains of different sizes, shake the contents well before use. Spread evenly by hand or with the integrated spreading aid. To do this, tear open the side strips of the pack. For a seamless transition to any existing lawn, spread the seeds slightly over the newly planted area. New lawn planting, lawn repair: After soil preparation, spread Smart Green evenly. Application rate: 25 g/m². For optimal germination, good contact with the ground is important, so carefully rake Smart Green flat (not deeper than 1 cm into the soil. Lightly roll or tread on the sprinkled surfaces.
Denser green for thinned lawns: After scarifying slightly, simply sow Smart Green between the existing grasses. Application rate: 20 g/m². Lightly roll or tread on the sprinkled areas.
Setting values for spreaders
To avoid streaks, the actual spreading width must be observed.
| Device | Settings* |
| 25 g/m² | |
| Gardena 430 | 6 |
| Einhell BG-SR12 | 6 |
| Wolf WE 330 | 9** |
* These values are approximate guidelines without guarantee. The product is not suitable for spin spreaders. If your device is not included, please ask the device manufacturer.
**Carry out two litter passes.
3. After sowing
Watering: Very important! Then water the areas carefully but extensively with a fine shower or sprinkler. Make sure that the lawn seeds are not washed away. Never let them dry out in the following weeks. If this should happen, the water stored in the Aqua-Gel can compensate for the deficit for a certain time (depending on the weather and soil conditions).
Mowing: Freshly raised lawns should only be mowed from a height of approx. 8 cm to approx. 5-6 cm, later to 3-5 cm. During summer heat and dry periods, the lawn should also not be shortened too much.
Fertilization: The starter fertiliser contained in Smart Seed is effective for up to approx. 5 weeks, depending on the weather. Westland Smart & Safe lawn fertiliser should be applied regularly 2-3 days after the second cut. This promotes dense turf and lush greenery.
